Empowering Future Voters: Hutchinson Senior Leads the Charge for Civic Engagement

by Natalie Jones, Director of Advocacy and Research, Tennessee Nonprofit Network

At Tennessee Nonprofit Network, we believe in the power of young people to drive positive change, and Hutchison senior Millie Malone is a shining example of the kind of change young people can create. As part of her myExperience capstone project through the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, Millie took the initiative to organize a voter registration drive on her school’s campus, inspiring her peers to engage in civic life and get involved in local elections.

With a mini-grant from Tennessee Nonprofit Network and support from the League of Women Voters, Millie created a space for students to register to vote—right in their own school. This thoughtful and strategic approach made it easier for Hutchison students who will turn 18 before November 5 to ensure they’re ready to participate in the election. As Millie put it, “The first step in ensuring people can vote is making sure they are registered.”

Her efforts went beyond the logistics of registration. By bringing this opportunity to campus, she sparked important conversations about civic responsibility and engagement, with students asking the League of Women Voters representative thoughtful questions about the voting process. Even younger students, too young to vote, were given a window into what it means to be an engaged citizen—an invaluable lesson in the lead-up to their own voting age and civic participation.

Millie’s leadership doesn’t stop there. She’s continuing to explore civic engagement by interviewing local government officials and producing a short documentary film aimed at encouraging others to stay informed and involved. “People may worry that they don’t know any of the candidates. Research, look up your candidates, get reliable information, and from there, it is based on whatever you think,” she said.

At TNN, we are proud to have supported Millie’s voter registration drive through our National Voter Registration Day event mini-grant. Her project aligns perfectly with our mission to strengthen communities through nonprofit leadership and civic participation. Millie’s passion for ensuring her peers understand the importance of voting—and feel confident in doing so—shows how much impact one student can make.

Millie is proof that the next generation of leaders is already stepping up. We are excited to continue supporting young people like her who are driving change and ensuring that every voice is heard.
